I still feel like I don’t know half my way around the weird and wonderful world of blogging. Even though ellemma is technically only a month and a bit old, I have been blogging for well over a year now, (see my post here about what I used to talk about pre-beauty and lifestyle), and yet despite that, I would consider myself still very much a ‘newbie’ blogger.
I’m embarrassed to reveal my stats or follower numbers on here, and although I’ve heard that “numbers aren’t everything”, I’m pretty sure it does matter at some point, at least in terms of securing collaborations with brands and/or sponsored posts. For now though, I’m going to just keep plodding along with the blog and see where it may take me, if anywhere at all.
One thing I’ve noticed recently, and what provided the motivation behind this post in the first place, was the fact that I’ve been nominated for The Liebster Award by three different bloggers over the past few weeks, and thought it was time I finally accepted their nominations and answered their questions.
For anyone who doesn’t know about The Liebster Award, it’s an award by bloggers, for bloggers, and is basically designed to increase awareness and raise the profile of new bloggers. A blogger with a following of a thousand or less is nominated and is given 11 questions to answer, both blog and non-blog related. That blogger then answers the questions, provides 11 new questions of their own to answer, and then nominates up to ten bloggers of their choosing to continue with the ‘award’.
(As far as I know, there is no actual award as such – if anyone knows different then I would be interested to hear about it!) It’s kind of like a chain-letter, and I think that high-profile bloggers would probably be sick to their stomach to be nominated for things like this. But for someone like little old me, it’s an honour!
So thank you very much to Amy at Living with ME, Laura at Mint Milkshake Memories and Urvashi at SummerLove for their nominations, and as I had to keep to eleven questions, I thought I would pick my favourites from each set. So without further ado, here they are!
What made you start your blog?
Before ellemma came about, I had been blogging about ‘mum stuff’ for quite a while. I don’t remember exactly what it was that made me think, “I wanna start a blog today”, but I know that I wanted to write about parenting and lifestyle topics. Being a mum of two under two at the time, meant that I had a lot of things to talk about, and I felt that writing blog posts was a way of expressing my thoughts, worries or general musings on any given subject, from teething to tandem pushchairs. But at the end of last year I made the decision to reinvent the blog because I didn’t want to make my children the focus anymore. I became private about them, and turned to make up and skin care as it’s something that I’m passionate about, and really enjoy reading posts about from other bloggers.
Have you had anything life-changing happen to you?
I’m not the most well-travelled or exciting of people, (although I did go to Thailand for three weeks on a college trip which was ah-mazing!), but giving birth to my two kids was for me, the most life-changing experience to date. And undoubtedly one of the happiest. I’ve never known pain like it, but at the same time, I have never known such happiness as meeting your little one for the very first time. It’s quite ironic that I’m talking about them so much in the same post that said how private I want to be about my family! But I couldn’t not share that one with you, as they honestly are my pride and joy.
What is your dream job?
I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t want the blog to become successful. In an ideal world, my followers would grow, sponsored posts and brand collaborations would lead to more opportunities, and eventually I may rise to the dizzy heights of some of our most favourite bloggers out there. I might even bite the bullet and start my own You Tube channel if things work out with the blog. If I could make enough of an income from the blog to be able to give up my ‘proper’ job, then I would. But right now it’s just a case of me focussing on my content and enjoying the creative process that comes with being a blogger. Because for me, the thing I love the most about blogging (apart from testing out make up and skin care and engaging with my readers), is the actual writing. I love writing so much, that one day I would love to write a novel. It’s been an aspiration of mine for years and I hope that one day, it might just come true.
What made you smile this week?
Easy peasy one here. My children make me smile every day of the week. I can’t name a specific thing, they just make me happy. If I did have to name a specific thing though, it would be seeing a photo that my best friend tagged me in on Facebook. It was to do with being friends for so long that it was difficult to remember who was the baddest influence. ( I think I’ve probably been the guilty party there mostly in the past.) Mwah ha ha!
Chocolate or Crisps?
Crisps! I’m definitely more of a savoury girl and have always preferred crispy things over chocolate. Don’t get me wrong, I love chocolate as much as the next person, but out of the two it’s gotta be crisps for me. (Am partial to Pom-Bears and I love Walkers Sensations in Thai Sweet Chilli). Saying that though, if I had a choice then it would probably be neither of those as I am more obsessed with sweets if nothing else, and can polish off a bag of Haribo in no time at all.
Do you do anything to stay fit?
Does running after a two and a half year old and a 17 month old count? No?! Well then I literally don’t do anything that constitutes as exercise, although I really should, as there are so many areas of my body which I’m unhappy with. After having my daughter I bought Tracy Anderson’s Post Pregnancy Workout DVD, determined that I would stick to it religiously every other day and be a lean machine in no time. Well I did the DVD once, (barely got through it), and it almost destroyed me. I haven’t put it on since, but I’m thinking about trying it again soon and pacing myself a bit more. I find gyms a little intimidating. At least with DVDs you can workout in the comfort of your own home. But for now I’m just a non-keep fit person. I don’t even own a pair of trainers for crying out loud.
Can you tell me one interesting fact about yourself?
I have a degree in Film Studies (was so close to a first too). The plan was to find a job within the industry after I graduated. Then I realised how difficult it was to find a job within the industry…and that was that really. It just never happened. I could have been more persistent and moved nearer to London which possibly would have helped, but time passed, marriage and babies happened, and I put that career aspiration to one side. I’m still chuffed that I’m a “bachelor of arts” though.
How do you add a personal touch to your blog?
This is a tricky one as I’m still so new to this blog and am finding my feet with it all. The whole ‘going self-hosted’ thing has been a massive learning curve too. With regards to keeping it personal though, I think it’s important to be one hundred per cent honest and yourself with your readers, as anything false or fake just won’t work. I try to provide personal information where relevant, as I want my readers to get to know me, but like I said about keeping my family-life private, I personally want to just focus on make up and skin care, and won’t get hubby and the children involved with posts and photos like I used to when writing the ‘mummy blogger’ stuff. I like to talk to you as though I know you and we’re just having a coffee and a chat, as I’d like to think that I would get on with my reader, (yes you!), and I hope that translates well on the blog.
So far, which one of your blog posts do you like the most?
I think my Garnier blogger box post was the one which I had been most excited about writing and publishing, because I couldn’t wait to share with everyone the news that I had won their ‘Reveal the Blogger in You’ competition in association with Superdrug. I also loved taking all the flat-lays of the box and its gorgeous goodies inside!
What are your favourite movies?
I loved studying and watching foreign cinema when I was at uni. There are so, so many amazing films out there that don’t even get shown in our cinemas because they aren’t ‘mainstream’ enough, which is such a shame. One of my most favourite films is a 1940’s Italian movie called ‘The Bicycle Thieves’ which is stunning and so well shot. I love a lot of old Hollywood classics, and Some Like it Hot is a firm fave (I love Marilyn), but I also love cheesy romantic comedies like Notting Hill and Bridget Jones. The Devil Wears Prada is great, and being a big kid at heart, I never get tired of the Disneys or Pixars, or Harry Potter.
What makes you thrive in life?
Slightly cheesy I know, but being a Mum means that I have this whole other agenda in life aside from my own, and that involves the happiness and welfare of my children. What makes me thrive in life is knowing that my kids are healthy and happy. If they’re happy then I am, simple as that. With regards to my own aspirations and motivation, I’d like to think I’m quite a determined sort of person, who’s capable of achieving something when I put my mind to it. I want to be successful in whatever I do, and do have quite a competitive streak in me which is a good and bad thing I suppose. As long as the people that I love and that are most important to me are healthy and happy, that’s all that matters to me.
So there you have my little Q&A! I quite enjoyed doing that, as it’s a totally different type of post for me and a break from the usual reviews. I now nominate Roshni at Roshni Reviews, Dani at Fashion Eye Dani, and Ali at Ali Frankle to answer my little bundle of questions!
